Desperate Housewives’ derogatory Remark on Filipinos

This just in. In an episode of “Desperate Housewives“, Teri Hatcher’s character (Susan) is at a hospital, being told by her gynecologist that she might be hitting menopause. Susan replies, “Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines.” If you go to abc.com, you watch the full episode and witness the scene at about 18:50 minutes into the episode.

How could this have possibly passed the producers anyway? People make a big deal about Isaiah Washington’s supposed derogatory remarks against the sexual orientation of his co-star (which, to this day, I am still unsure as to its validity), but this comment – which, clearly, is more obviously discriminatory, is not given enough attention.

This is clearly a bad move from the producers since a good majority of Filipinos tune into this TV series. Then again, maybe they feel that they don’t need to bother with their ratings in a “backwater country” like us.
